The seizure and confiscation of assets tackled during the SEEPAG Conference

The 35th SEEPAG Conference having as topic “Forms of seizure and confiscation of assets. Experiences, best practices, challenges and difficulties in international cooperation attached to asset forfeiture and asset sharing” was held online, on 7th of November 2024, under the Greek Chairmanship of SEEPAG.

Mr. Panagiotis Maniatis, SEEPAG Chairperson, Dr. Oğuz Serkant Akın, Director General of SELEC and Ms. Tanja Levajkovikj, SELEC’s Director for Legal and Internal Affairs, addressed opening remarks.

The event was attended by the SEEPAG Members, SELEC Liaison Officers, prosecutors, experts and specialists from European Public Prosecution Office, Eurojust, EUBAM, Georgia, Regional Anti-Corruption Initiative, Slovak Republic, Ukraine, United Kingdom and United States of America.

Differences in legal systems, standards of evidence, and forfeiture regimes can create delays or barriers to collaboration in asset confiscation. Cooperation through regional and international bodies enables greater alignment of national laws, simplifies the process of requesting assistance, and improves the speed and efficiency of asset recovery efforts by helping countries to identify and address delays and gaps caused by differences in legislation.

Having been actively operating for 21 years and organizing its 35th meeting this year, SEEPAG, which serves as a platform for national investigating and prosecuting authorities to overcome challenges arising from legal and procedural barriers, has become a network of increasing importance in judicial cooperation.
