On the 14th of November 2019 at the SELEC Training Center in Bucharest took place the workshop “The Palermo Convention. A quick tool in the fight against drug trafficking”. The event was jointly organized by SELEC and the Police Liaison Office of the Embassy of Italy in Bucharest.
The session, which was opened by the SELEC General Director, Mrs. Snejana Maleeva, and by H.E. Mr. Marco Giungi, Italian Ambassador to Bucharest, was attended by representatives of the General Prosecutor’s Offices, specialized Antidrug officers and Liaison Officers of the 11 SELEC Member States, as well as by experts from Eurojust and CEPOL.
Mrs. Snejana Maleeva mentioned the importance of the topic, having in mind that the trafficking of drugs is affecting the region and this can be seen in the large number of cases and seizures reported by SELEC Member States each year. SELEC General Director highlighted that SELEC is an efficient platform in fighting against all forms of transborder crime, including drugs trafficking, and that this workshop contributes to the efficiency of the law enforcement authorities in their operational activities.
H.E Mr. Marco Giungi referred to the usefulness of this workshop as a tool for fighting organized crime, for enhancing the cross border cooperation, by finding methods to take faster countermeasures for combating organized crime.
The workshop was organized with the purpose to further strengthen the operational capabilities to combat drug trafficking through the use of the “Palermo Convention”. Funding opportunities to set up Joint Investigation Teams through EU funded projects (SANCAS, IPA 2, PAMECA 5) were also presented during the meeting.
